I live in North Texas and can ride for most of the year. My problem is getting cold and sweaty on my longer rides. Any suggestions for base layers and jerseys that wick away the moisture and help to keep you dry. I usually ride with a craft cold weather base layer and a jersey with a wind blocker front. I will use another vest as needed depending on the temps. Also any suggestion on gloves that would keep your hands warm and dry would be helpful.
Thanks guys, keep up the great podcast and forum topics.
It all starts with a good base layer. We discussed this in our recent Holiday Buyers Guide Podcast!
We recommend the Castelli core Mesh base layer.
It’s just important to use layers that you can remove or unzip. You don’t want to overdress which will cause you sweat more as you ride.
For gloves my Dad actually bought me a pair of North Face gloves. Not even sure what kind they are but they have been amazing for nearly 10 years. Were not even cycling gloves but worked like a charm. Starting to get a hole in them so I’ll be in the market for some new ones as well so interested in hearing what others have to say.
Under Armour cold gear for base layer, WAYYYYYY cheaper the cycling stuff. Then a good wind blocking cycling jacket and bibs
Tinfoil toes. Wrap your toes in tinfoil (over socks) before putting on your shoes. Surprisingly effective. Aside from a nice base layer, keeping toes and fingers warm goes a long way.
Love all the helpful gear tips here!
I’d like to reiterate a good base layer bc without it it doesn’t matter how good your gloves and toes are. Keep the core warm and the OG Belgian saying is, ‘warm blood’ will pump out to your extremities to keep them warm.
Also of particular note is ‘breathability’ - we can all find base layers that are warm as heck but many of us know about those getting sopping wet and then ultimately causing one to get cold. Its why we don’t wear tshirts underneath. Or sweat clothes.
The breathability part is what makes these ‘technical’ in nature - they wisk the sweat away from your skin with a porous fabric that still keeps you warm. And even then its an art to finding the right base layer to how hard you are riding and what the temperature is outside. There’s a lot of combinations and why I have currently 5 different base layers that I’ll use depending on the weather and my workout. If I’m riding easy I’ll go with a warmer base layer if its really cold.
On the other hand if I’m riding hard like sweet spot or VO2’s I’ll choose a more breathable base layer.
Thank you for all of your tips you provide such informative knowledge, as a beginner which brand cycling suit you prefer at a reasonable price.
Hey @daisie.magrob !
There are many great brands out there.
I am a fan of pearlizumi, which is a great budget choice. Sportful and primal are also great.
I will also say that Black bibs has become a popular budget choice, though I have yet to try them out.
Material-wise I have found any base layer made mostly from merino wool is hard to beat. Naturally anti-bacterial, it is warm in the cold and cool in summer. As an aside, you can wear the same garment a few times without any foul odours . A few outdoors companies produce base layers of this type which means you’re not paying rip-off prices to bike specific manufacturers for synthetic/non-recyclable garments.
Hello @Lacey_Rivette !
let me check out them, thanks for the suggestion Lacey.
Another vote for anything merino wool based. It’s like some form of wonder material; clever things those
Wool socks + toe warmers + insulated shoe covers is a must! Also addition of syran wrap for when its cold and wet is clutch too!
Yes! And to play super-safe… waterproof booties over your neoprene ones.
