I’ve found the Whoop on avg is about 10 bpm faster during a endurance ride of 2 hours compared to my Garmin chest strap. What is your opinion on strain and recovery being the Whoop reads high. I might need to try a 3rd HR monitor to see which is accurate lol.

If you aren’t using a bicep strap while cycling, it helps accuracy. With the bicep strap my average & max hr per workout are within 2-5 beats of what was recorded by the chest strap on the Garmin.

I haven’t done any true testing of this, but I believe the HR accuracy is a bit individualized based off of how it sits on the wrist as well as how much movement the rider has. As my HR trends towards max I have noticed that the discrepancy becomes larger and larger, which is not necessarily the case in other activities vs the bike. Just an observation.

@chad that is interesting that the bicep strap helps smooth that out.

i have the same issue. i pretty much totally ignore whoop strain. i’ve found an easy 4 hour ride gives me a 20 point strain and an extremely intense 90 minute circuit race that ruins me gives me a 20 point strain. I recover from those completely differently. I generally look at IF and TSS in training peaks for “strain” and whoop for “recovery”

The new DCR review is tough on whoop. I hope they take this and consider the problems from the latest firmware, and prioritize letting us connect our hr straps during activities and integrate better with other services like TrainingPeaks to help identify activities. It would be interesting to see if whoop’s algorithms eventually ends up being adopted by another hardware/watch mfr to compete with Garmin+Firstbeat, or even bought out by Apple to absorb into health/watch?

I rely mainly on the sleep tracking (or in my case sleep mocking) which largely remains unscathed by reviewers.

@fatheroleary sent that invite over!

Thanks Isaiah

Go it. Whoop strap out of the box and on sir !

Have a great weekend Team Whoop

Whoop question

If recovery is green but you have no workout scheduled do you ride anyway? On the other side if you are in the red and have a workout scheduled do you do it or take day off?

I don’t really go by the strain guide, I mostly use it to see how sh*^ my sleep is. There’s been plenty of days it said I was going to die and I had a great ride while other days it said GO FOR IT and I could barely hang with zone 2.

For strain/recovery when you’re already following a professionally designed plan like these I wouldn’t rely on it beyond recognizing multi-day or long term trends that can point to a problem or gains, at which point I’d ask your coach or bring it here for advice.

Add me please, @jturkal

Hi @vs779 - we get this question alot and here is the short answer: FtFP. Because you want to live the lifestyle that supports your ability to recover from your training. Your training plan sets you up for success but its up to you to eat right, sleep enough and recover to try and get into the green on days following your rest days.

If you are green on your rest day, still FtFP - I call it ‘honoring the rest day’. If you are red following a rest day it could mean a few things, usually a combination:

  • not enough sleep
    -strain too high
    -life stress (HRV) too high
    -training and training load does not match your plan’s recovery days
    = not recovering enough

That said - I myself and plenty of athletes have gone on to have good training days in the red. So always FtFP but use the Whoop to help set expectations and learn about your lifestyle and your training all work in harmony when those magical ‘in the green’ days occur.

Would you please invite me to the whoop team?

@justin.hersom
