Strava racing segments free vs paid

Hey guys love the podcast. My question is about strava and the subscription plan. I am the ride director for our local “t-shirt” ride but after listening to the podcast I want to do something different this year. I was going to set it up as a race for those who are on strava and want to race it. We would give out prizes etc for KOM and overall placings but looking at Strava free vs subscription it looks like our riders would have to have a subscription to be able to compete? Do you know if this is correct? I don’t know when they changed it but in the past you could make routes for free. Are a lot of cyclist actually paying for Strava?
Thanks

  • Everyone on free can take part on any segment, no need to pay to “participate” in segments.
  • Everyone on free can see the segment top 10 results, but only those.
  • You need to pay if you want to dig into the segment results further than that.
  • In your case, you would likely need at least one person with paid access to be able to review the entire list of riders on the segment for tracking results.

Here is a full breakdown on the changes that happened a couple of months ago.
