Back Squats with arthritis

I’m cool with all the weight lifting except heavy back squats due to a previous surgery that led to arthritis. I can’t lift real heavy on back squats. What should I do to compensate?

I do OK limiting myself to 100-125 lbs total. If I try getting up to 250-300+ pounds, that’s bad for me.

What should I do instead of lifting heavy? Lift lighter & lift really slowly to make it more difficult? Looking for an idea here.
